For the past
twenty-five years Naum Panovski has had a professional,
academic, and television career in his native country,
Macedonia, in
the countries of former Yugoslavia (Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia,
Slovenia), and in the United States.
Naum Panovski's professional
theatre experience includes work as a director or/and
dramaturg on more than seventy productions
in English, Macedonian, Turkish, Italian, Croatian,
Serbian, Albanian etc., produced by professional theatres
and/or work as a artistic director, adviser, or producer
in many theatres all over former Yugoslavia. During his
extensive career as an artistic leader, director or dramaturg
he has worked with leading playwrights and actors in his
former country or in U.S. such as: Carl Weber, Robert
Corrigan, Joseph Chaikin, Maria Irene Fornes, Jean Claude
van Itallie, Ted Hoffman, Richard Schechner, Paul Zindel,
Dzevad Karahasan, Goran Stafanovski, Nenad Prokic, Ivo
Bresan, Mira Furlan, Milka Podrug Kokotovic, Mise Martinovic,
Marin Gozze, Ina Gogalova-Marojevic, Smaranda Branescu,
Milica Stojanova, Luba Tadic, Liljana Krstic etc.
His
expertise in practical and theoretical theatre and drama
spans a wide range of areas. As a professor, he has taught
and lectured both on a practical and theoretical level various
aspects of theatre, drama and performing arts in his native
country at The Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje,
at The University of Texas at Dallas, Smith College, Bentley
College, Virginia Commonwealth University, The University
of the Arts, and at other institutions.
As
a theoretician of theatre and drama, in his former country
and in this country as well he has contributed numerous
articles to various publications such as Performing
Arts Journal, American Theatre, Scena, Theatre
Voice, etc., participated on panels and symposia, and
served on boards and in other artistic leadership positions.
His first book Theatre
as a Weapon which explores various issues
of theatre structures and their relation to society and
Macedonian National Liberation, was published in 1991 by
Kultura Publishing from Macedonia, while his Directing
Poiesis published by Peter Lang Publishing
from New York 1993, explores the art of directing from both
theoretical/aesthetic and practical perspective.
As
a professional media and print journalist, editor and director,
Naum Panovski has directed, written, produced, edited or
hosted over a thousand various television programs [documentaries,
talk shows, television films, musicals, children shows,
etc.] for Macedonian Television.
He
is a recipient of many distinguished awards for his outstanding
artistic achievements and his creative work is internationally
recognized. His productions selected for juried participation
at international festivals are distinguished in essays on
his work published in specialized theatre magazines and
books, in numerous interviews conducted with him, or in
feature stories that appeared in printed media and/or on
television.
The
Master Thesis Hamlet our Contemporary - Panovski's
Production done by Ms. Aurelie Clemente, Graduate
student - M. A. Candidate, and submitted to the Universite
Paris VII UFR d'Etudes Anglophones in September 1996, has
a special place on his long list of distinctions and awards.
